Sri Lankan PM and Indian High Commissioner Pay Floral Tributes to Mahatma Gandhi On Gandhi Jayanti

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and the High Commissioner of India, Santosh Jha, paid floral tributes to the father of the nation. They garlanded a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Prime Minister’s Office in Colombo. The bust was a gift from India in 2019, commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The 42-inch-tall bronze bust of Gandhiji, in a meditative pose, was sculpted by Padma Bhushan Awardee Ram Vanji Sutar. Mr. Sutar is also credited with designing the world’s tallest bronze statue, the Statue of Unity, of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Kevadiya, Gujarat.

Following the ceremony, the Indian High Commissioner called on Dr. Amarasuriya and congratulated her on her elevation as the Premier of the island nation. While extending his best wishes for her tenure, Mr. Jha underscored India’s consistent commitment to the people of Sri Lanka. During the interaction, views were exchanged on accelerating progress in the multifaceted bilateral ties between the two countries.
